I am currently working at a small K-8 school in New Jersey. We are
very fortunate to have two computer labs. One is for the students in grades K-4 and the other is for the middle school
students.
I see the K-4 students on a weekly basis for a 41 minute period. This is
a cooperative learning situation. The classroom teachers keep me informed about what the children are studying or where
they need to hone some skills.
This year, the students in grades 3 & 4 have started keyboarding using
a software program called Keybo. I have been met with mixed reactions, some kids love it and others grumble and groan
for the entire 15 minutes! (One would think it was 15 hours the way they carry on!). Time will tell if there is
any change in their habits regarding 'typing'.
How I Got Started...
I began working at my school as a substitute teacher/secretary/aide, in
other words anything they needed me for I was ready, willing and able to take on the challenge.
After a few years, a special area teacher got another position in another
school, therefore, there was a need for another special area teacher. The powers that be decided the school should be
offering a computer program. I knew how to work a computer and was a certified teacher and was offered the position!
The rest as they say is history.
